Grow your own fuel to heat your home
It has been noticeable in the past few winters that heating our homes with oil is a heavy weight on everyone’s household budget. With oil prices on rise year on year it makes sense for us all to consider other viable options to heat our homes.
Miscanthus, with its high heating value and low moisture content makes it very suitable for processing in pellet form. There was up to recently only evidence in the UK and Europe of Miscanthus being burned in boilers but this is no longer the case. The first domestic Miscanthus pellet boiler is already in place in Barry O’Shaughnessy’s farm in Adare, Co. Limerick. It was commissioned in December 2009 and has proven that Miscanthus pellets are an ideal fuel to heat your house. It is a Benekov Prime 20 Boiler and was sourced through Irish agents of the Czech manufacturer Benekov.
Barry is very happy with the performance of his 25kW burner which heats 2 houses. He already grows 10 acres of Miscanthus with JHM Crops and 2 of these acres yield enough Miscanthus to heat his 2 houses. He can then sell the rest to other local end users through JHM. Such a model offers huge potential to those already growing Miscanthus with JHM as well as domestic users of oil who want to reduce high heating costs. This model locks in energy production and end use in the local area and reduces heating bills.
