Co-firing Miscanthus in Power Stations

JHM has secured commitments from both the ESB and Bord na Mona for the burning of Miscanthus for electricity generation. Biomass such as Miscanthus is part of the solution which will reduce emissions significantly and prolong the life of the three power stations- securing jobs in the process. JHM Crops was the first to test Miscanthus in Edenderry Power Station on January 24th 2008. On May 24th 2010 the Government finally announcend the REFIT Price (the price to be paid for Miscanthus and other biomass in the peat power stations). By supporting the use of biomass- and especially Irish grown biomass such as Miscanthus- Government will continue to have a secure supply of power that will complement progress in the wind and wave sectors. The coal-fired power plant at Moneypoint could also use biomass such as Miscanthus to produce power; there is a lot of Miscanthus already planted in its vicinity. Miscanthus is a proven feedstock for co-firing with coal already as it is used in Drax power station in the UK. JHM has proven the capability of Miscanthus as a fuel and has also proven the supply chain works from farmer to end user. By displacing the carbon emissions from peat and coal with carbon negative Miscanthus we are prolonging the life of power stations, securing jobs in the sector and saving the exchequer the cost of buying carbon credits and providing security of supply to consumers.
